About this design
The old service didn’t wait for calm seas.
“The Old Guard” is an unofficial Coast Guard expression for the rougher generations that carried the service forward from its Revenue Cutter and U.S. Life-Saving Service roots. This design honors the surfmen, cutter crews, keepers, and watchstanders who went when the call came.
The lower banner—“The Blue Book Said Go”—draws from Keeper Patrick Etheridge’s legendary explanation of the Life-Saving Service regulations: the book said crews had to go out. It said nothing about having to come back.
